This is the first printing of the first edition of THE LIFE OF HORACE BENEDICT DE SAUSSURE by Douglas Freshfield & Henry F. Montagnier. This book was published in London by Edward Arnold in 1920. The book measures 24cm tall x 16cm, and has 479 pages, 21 b/w plates, map on front EPs, 1 map inside text, bibliography of de Saussure’s writings, index. A scholarly biography of de Saussure, the main player behind the first ascent of Mont Blanc, in several ways the principal progenitor of mountaineering. This book is very scarce and is one of the most important histories of climbing in the Alps. Freshfield was awarded an honory doctorate degree by the University of Geneve for this book. No doubt Freshfield deserved the award, but I suspect that Montagnier, a leading & obsessively enthusiastic Mont Blanc scholar who shunned the spotlight with respect to his own writings, probably did most of the research for this book.

CONDITION: Original burgundy cloth, embossed edge borders front, gilt lettering front & spine. Clean and fine condition but some foxing on first few and last few pages (other pages have no foxing), a couple of very faint nearly undetectable small spots rear cover. The preface page is the page with the most foxing and a photo of it is included below. There are only about 6 pages that have foxing and it is much less than that on the preface page. Price: SOLD.
