ONE OF THE BEST HISTORIC PHOTOS OF K2


This is an original b/w photo print from the 1954 ITALIAN EXPEDIITON TO K2 taken by Mario Fantin. This is not a modern copy. It is original, made from exposure to the original negative in a darkroom. The photo measures 181mm tall x 240mm (7.13 inches x 9.5 inches). This photo was taken by Mario Fantin during the approach to K2 Base Camp on the 1954 expedition that made the first ascent of the mountain. The photo is at the place usually referred to as Concordia, the confluence of the Goodwin-Austin and Baltoro glaciers. Of the historical photos from the early expeditions to K2, this is one of the best, possessing stunning composition and balance. The color photo, shown here for comparison, is one by Galen Rowell taken at approximately the same spot during the 1975 USA expedition to K2. The scene is one of the most photographed of all K2 views, but very few photos match the quality of this image recorded by Fantin.

CONDITION: Original photographic print on slightly textured paper. The original print is hard to photograph adequately because it reflects light due to the textured surface of the photographic paper. Two photos are shown to give a better indication of the contrast in the original print. No tears, no creases, no soiling. There is a very thin horizontal line in the image across the upper S Face of K2. This appears to be part of the print where the paper must have been inadvertently exposed to a sliver of light prior to processing. Expert archival restoration could easily conceal this thin line. The backside of the photo has some minor foxing, no other marks. Price: $150.
